Fantastic Friday! Wk7

We had the busy-est and best day on Friday last week.  First thing in the morning, after we had done the roll, we went to visit the Yr 0/1 classes (called Pihinga) and joined in with their 'Discovery Time' session which is a play-based learning time - they set up a wide range of activities in the area outside their classrooms and the children can just choose whatever they want to do.  Some of the activities included dress ups, the sandpit, tonka trucks in the bark, a mud kitchen, dancing with skipping ropes and hula hoops, and a 'healthy sandwich' station and picnic area.  We stayed and played for nearly an hour and every single one of our students joined in and had fun - I was so proud of them and their awesome behaviour.  Unfortunately I was having so much fun too that I didn't take any photos, but we are going back again (once a fortnight) so will try to remember my camera next time!

After we came back from Discovery we quickly had morning tea and then it was time to go on our outing.  This week we drove all the way into Christchurch and went to Imagination Station in Cathedral Junction.  Everyone had an awesome time playing with lego for over an hour, and we also watched the trams drive past the window (including one driven by Liz's Dad!) Maybe another time we might ask him if we can go for a ride.

 


 

 

Then after all that excitement, we raced back to school, had lunch and then it was time for our fortnightly sports session with the coaches from North Canterbury Primary Sports - this week we were working on our balancing skills, through lots of fun games. Thanks Lisa, Jesse, Nick and Paige!



Phew - I am pleased it's the weekend now! I'm exhausted...

Term 4 is flying by!

Oh dear - I just realised I haven't posted anything since the end of last term! Apologies, it has been a whirlwind 4 weeks, and I think the remaining 5 weeks are going to be the same! Here are a few highlights from the term so far: Firstly, we welcomed a new student to our class! Grace joins us from St Joseph's School and has settled in really well. That takes our number of students up to 8, so things are pretty busy now! Because of this, we have also welcomed Tania (who was next door in Rm21), into our class for the rest of the year to give us a hand - thank you Tania! On Thurs 18th Oct we participated in the New Zealand Shake Out - a national earthquake drill. We watched The Turtle Safe song  and practiced for several days prior. Then at 9.30am on the 18th, we pretended there was an earthquake and all dropped to the ground and covered our heads. Some of us hid under tables too. Last post of the year - a mixture of bits!

And just like that - the year is over! I have taken literally hundreds and hundreds of photos this year, and wish I had time to share them all. Here are a few highlights from the last few weeks that I want to share before I log off for the summer break. These photos were snapped the other day when I noticed Grace and Kieran playing a game of peekaboo around the classroom door. Both were in fits of laughter and having a great time - so lovely to watch, especially as Grace has only been with us a few weeks. We also role-played going to the hairdressers, to help one of our students who finds it a bit stressful. Kieran volunteered to be our model. He wore a cape (an art shirt!), we sprayed his hair with a bit of water, then PRETENDED to cut his hair with both scissors and a fantastic app called 'Hair Trimmer' which sounds exactly like actual clippers. Around the World - our week in the Netherlands

This term our topic is 'Around the World' and each week we will be studying a different country, learning how to find it on the map, looking at it's flag and how to say hello in the language, tasting food from the country, and learning a bit about what makes it unique and different to NZ. We kicked off the term with The Netherlands, since 2 of our Teacher Assistants are married to Dutch men, and one of our Teacher Assistants is in fact Dutch herself! On our outing on Tuesday we drove to the "Magnolia Electric Cafe", which until recently was called Van Dams Dutch Cafe. In the foyer there was a display of lots of embroideries, paintings and objects from the Netherlands, and inside the cafe they have a good range of dutch food products for sale. We were all very interested in the different cheeses, hotdogs in a can, and the range of lollies! In the end we decided to purchase a bag of these lollies below.
