Noisy day!!!

Right next to our classroom is the Ashgrove School hall. Over the last few weeks the hall has been closed while builders have been putting new cladding on the outside of it. While doing this work, they also discovered that when it was built the cables weren't buried deep enough under the concrete, so guess what? This week they have been smashing up all the concrete and taking it away. Boy has it been loud in our unit!!!

The students have been very interested in what has been making our class rumble and shake so we put on some ear defenders and looked over the fence. There were lots of men in high vis vests, with hard hats on to keep them safe. They had a little digger, a jack hammer and lots of wheelbarrows.


Hopefully next week they will be moving on to a quieter part of the project!

Term 4 is flying by!

Oh dear - I just realised I haven't posted anything since the end of last term! Apologies, it has been a whirlwind 4 weeks, and I think the remaining 5 weeks are going to be the same! Here are a few highlights from the term so far: Firstly, we welcomed a new student to our class! Grace joins us from St Joseph's School and has settled in really well. That takes our number of students up to 8, so things are pretty busy now! Because of this, we have also welcomed Tania (who was next door in Rm21), into our class for the rest of the year to give us a hand - thank you Tania! On Thurs 18th Oct we participated in the New Zealand Shake Out - a national earthquake drill. We watched The Turtle Safe song  and practiced for several days prior. Last post of the year - a mixture of bits!

And just like that - the year is over! I have taken literally hundreds and hundreds of photos this year, and wish I had time to share them all. Here are a few highlights from the last few weeks that I want to share before I log off for the summer break. These photos were snapped the other day when I noticed Grace and Kieran playing a game of peekaboo around the classroom door. Both were in fits of laughter and having a great time - so lovely to watch, especially as Grace has only been with us a few weeks. We also role-played going to the hairdressers, to help one of our students who finds it a bit stressful. Kieran volunteered to be our model. He wore a cape (an art shirt!), we sprayed his hair with a bit of water, then PRETENDED to cut his hair with both scissors and a fantastic app called 'Hair Trimmer' which sounds exactly like actual clippers. Around the World - our week in the Netherlands

This term our topic is 'Around the World' and each week we will be studying a different country, learning how to find it on the map, looking at it's flag and how to say hello in the language, tasting food from the country, and learning a bit about what makes it unique and different to NZ. We kicked off the term with The Netherlands, since 2 of our Teacher Assistants are married to Dutch men, and one of our Teacher Assistants is in fact Dutch herself! On our outing on Tuesday we drove to the "Magnolia Electric Cafe", which until recently was called Van Dams Dutch Cafe. In the foyer there was a display of lots of embroideries, paintings and objects from the Netherlands, and inside the cafe they have a good range of dutch food products for sale. We were all very interested in the different cheeses, hotdogs in a can, and the range of lollies! In the end we decided to purchase a bag of these lollies below.
