Play time in Room 22

Research tells us that key ways that children learn include

  • playing,
  • being with other people,
  • being active,
  • exploring and new experiences,
  • talking to themselves, communication with others,
  • meeting physical and mental challenges,
  • being shown how to do new things,
  • practicing and repeating skills
  • and having fun.
Therefore, in between all our more 'serious' schoolwork, we make sure that the students have plenty of time to play, so this week I thought I would show you a few photos of us during play.
Firstly, as part of our Space topic this term, we created a scientist exploration box. The students put their hands through the holes and into the gloves and can then 'safely' explore the moon rocks and other things inside (tweezers, magnets, magnifying glasses). Everyone has been taking turns beautifully and have really enjoyed pretending to be real scientists/astronauts.

On sunny days we have been moving a lot of our classroom to our outside area, to make the most of the nice weather.  As you can see below, everyone enjoys the wide range of play activities set up for them to choose from including cars, dolls house, blocks, chalk, bean bags, and our mini trampoline.

Construction is very popular in our class at the moment. Johnandrew often chooses to play with Lego, creating some amazing structures, while Lake prefers the wooden blocks.

Cooperative skills are practised during games like 'Pop Up Pirate' - learning to take turns and negotiate takes a lot of practice!

POP!
Kereama and Sophie-Marie spent a long time playing with the farmyard this week. They made paddocks for different animals, and the farmer was busy loading and unloading their tractor.

Wobbling on the 'wobbly' bridge is always popular, but this is the first week students have been using it together rather than waiting for individual turns. It's great to see friendships developing within our class. Kereama is now confident enough to ask other children to play chase with him too!
